How to Make Your Botox Last Longer

Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world, with over 6.2 million Botox treatments administered in 2021.That’s almost 17,000 Botox appointments every single day! The craze is justified in its popularity – when injected regularly, this neurotoxin smooths facial wrinkles and eliminates fine lines to make you look younger and rejuvenated, and gives you a major boost of self-confidence.

A well-known downside of Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin, or Daxxify (the neurotoxin list goes on…), is the sad fact that it doesn’t last forever. The body breaks down the toxin over time, on average between 3-5 months, and you need to continue receiving injections to keep your youthful, frozen appearance. While there’s no way to make Botox last forever, there are ways to make it last longer. Let’s review a few of those tips now.

What is Botox?

To make Botox last longer, let’s first understand what it is. Botox is a protein refined from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s a muscle relaxant, which makes it useful for a variety of applications besides cosmetics, including helping people who suffer from muscle spasms, excessive sweating, severe migraines, and even some bladder disorders. Its most popular application, however, is to relax facial muscles to eliminate concentration lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and lateral forehead wrinkles. It was also just FDA approved for platysmal bands in the neck.
The Advanced Pigment Correcting Peel specifically targets hyperpigmentation. It dramatically diminishes the appearance of skin discoloration, while also reducing pores and smoothing skin texture. The result is a brighter, more clarified and even skin tone.

For best results, we recommend 1-3 treatments every four weeks. For 2-6 days after treatment, you may experience some light flaking or peeling. Once your skin has finished exfoliating, it will appear smooth, even and radiant.

Tips for Making Botox Last Longer

Botox is eventually broken down and absorbed by the body, so it typically needs to be reinjected every 3-5 months, depending on your metabolism. Over the course of many injections, your muscles become atrophied, so your results could last longer and prevent deep wrinkles from even forming. Here are some other ways to maximize your results:

  • Choose an experienced Botox provider. Great providers know how to optimize Botox amounts and injection sites so your results are more enduring.
  • Dose = Duration: The more units you inject, the longer the muscle will remain relaxed. Ask your injector to opt for more units at your next visit for a longer time between visits.
  • Avoid the sun on the day of treatment and wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day afterwards. Sun exposure boosts your circulation, which makes blood vessels dilate and can increase the rate at which Botox is broken down by your body.
  • Avoid using masks, toners, scrubs, or abrasive cleaners on the treatment area for at least a week after your tox injections. These products can disrupt the process as Botox settles into the treatment sites.

The Biggest Botox Hack: Zinc

Our biggest recommendation, though, is to take zinc supplements 4-7 days before getting your injections. Zinc is becoming recognized as a “Botox booster,” extending the life of your Botox injections up to 30%. Botulinum toxin is a member of a class of enzymes that requires zinc to bind to be effective. For best results, 50 mg should be taken four days prior to the injection, with two capsules daily, one in the morning, one in the evening. That way, an elevated level of zinc will already be present in your body during treatment. Botox requires zinc in order to be effective, so you want to make sure you have enough zinc to make it last as long as possible.
One downside to taking over-the-counter zinc supplements is that it can be harsh on your stomach and patients have reported feelings of nausea when taking these supplements, so it is important you take it after a meal with a full stomach. At Clinical Aesthetics, we carry Ortho Molecular brand, which has been very effective at extending our patients’ Botox results. The Reacted Zinc is proven to have significantly less nausea side effects than other over the counter zinc supplement brands.
