It’s Chemical Peel Season! Which Peel Is Right For You?

A chemical peel is a great way to give your skin some tender loving care, especially after a long summer spent outdoors. Chemical peels improve your skin tone and texture, as well as smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Patients find that sun spots and discoloration fade away with a medium grade peel. A lighter peel will soften fine lines and give your skin a lasting glow.

Fall and winter is the perfect time of year to consider getting a chemical peel. Since a big part of your aftercare is staying out of the sun, autumn and winter are an ideal time for chemical peels since there’s less daylight and people generally have less sun exposure throughout the day than the summer. Let’s take a look at the four types of chemical peels we offer at Clinical Aesthetics, so you can decide which one is right for you:

1) The MicroPeel from Skinceuticals

The MicroPeel is ideal for reducing the appearance of skin imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, laxity, dullness, and fine lines & wrinkles. It is a three-step procedure combining a chemical peel solution, exfoliation, and cryogenic therapy.

At Clinical Aesthetics, we offer 20% or 30% glycolic solutions. These stimulate the production of collagen to renew your skin cells and reduce sun damage. The MicroPeel is a great starter peel since it’s effective on sensitive skin and typically there is only minor peeling, if any. Best of all, there’s zero downtime.

2) The Advanced Pigment Correcting Peel by Skinceuticals

The Advanced Pigment Correcting Peel specifically targets hyperpigmentation. It dramatically diminishes the appearance of skin discoloration, while also reducing pores and smoothing skin texture. The result is a brighter, more clarified and even skin tone.

For best results, we recommend 1-3 treatments every four weeks. For 2-6 days after treatment, you may experience some light flaking or peeling. Once your skin has finished exfoliating, it will appear smooth, even and radiant.

3) The Vi Peel

The Vi Peel with Precision Plus is the most aggressive peel we offer. It’s ideally suited to treat acne scars and melasma. It also treats hyperpigmentation with a chemical formula that effectively suppresses melanogenesis, which is the process of producing melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin. This promotes rapid cell turnover for an improved skin tone.

Starting about 2-3 days after treatment, your skin will flake and peel for about 5-7 days. During this time, resist the urge to pick at your flaking skin, since this can cause scarring. Because of these 5-7 days of expected “social downtime,” we recommend that you schedule your Vi Peel well in advance of important dates or events.

4) IPL

While not technically a chemical peel as there is no topical chemical applied, IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treats the same type of skin issues as chemical peels, just using a laser. IPL can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, sun damage, vascular lesions, acne, and even hair removal. Like a chemical peel, fall and winter is the ideal time to get IPL since you can avoid sun exposure during the healing period.

Your provider runs a handheld device over the treatment area which delivers a broad, intense spectrum of light. The targeted area will gradually darken for 24-48 hours post-treatment until the skin flakes off, typically within one week on the face and two weeks on the body. The skin is left clear and rejuvenated. One advantage of IPL is that it can target multiple skin conditions at once, thanks to its multiple light wavelengths.

As we say at Clinical Aesthetics, “one is a treat, three is a treatment.” Chemical peels are best done in a series, so their effects penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin and create noticeable improvement in skin tone and texture.
