Why You Should Rotate Between Different Types of Neurotoxins

There’s nothing like the joy of perfectly settled Botox – the smoothness of your forehead and the skin around your eyes, the youthful look and confidence that comes along with it. Once you try it, you’ll want to keep coming back again and again – and again!

Injectables like Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin, etc., and dermal fillers like Juvéderm, Voluma, or Restylane, can achieve remarkable anti-aging results: smoothing wrinkles and fine lines, restoring volume from inevitable collagen loss, and giving your skin an overall revitalized appearance. But as with other compounds that enter your body, like medications, alcohol, or caffeine, your body can eventually develop a tolerance to them. In the process, you may see your results getting weaker over time as your body builds resistance. Once this happens, each injection will become less and less effective.

If that’s the case, then it might be a perfect time to talk to your injector about switching up your regular brand of neurotoxin. Switching your brand of tox will help prevent the development of tolerance, so when you rotate back to Botox again, you’ll see longer lasting results and shorter onset time. The different types of neurotoxins work similarly, but have minor differences in benefits that we’ll explore below.

Dermal Fillers vs. Botox

First, it’s important to understand the difference between neurotoxins, like Botox, and dermal fillers. While Botox is a neurotoxin that selectively paralyzes facial muscles, and is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dermal fillers are a substance injected beneath your skin to add volume to the face, whether that be to enhance thin lips, or add volume to the face.

In short, Botox relaxes muscles; fillers add volume. The goal of both treatments is to give you a more youthful, rejuvenated look. They are best used in conjunction to achieve this goal.

Dermal fillers also last longer than Botox. Results from fillers can last up to 18 months, with Voluma lasting up to two years. In contrast, Botox needs to be touched up every 3-4 months. Sometimes it can take up to 21 days to see full results. Jeuveau by Evolus lasts between 5-6 months and only takes a few days to fully kick in.

Different fillers offered at Clinical Aesthetics are designed for different parts of the face:

  • Volbella by Juvederm and Kysse by Restylane are designed specifically for lip injections. Restylane® Kysse is great for lip enhancement and reducing lip lines, or smokers’ lines. It can last for up to 12 months, it is natural-looking, keeps the lips hydrated, and provides long-lasting, kissable results.
  • Volbella is used for vertical lines above the lip and mild plumping of the lips. This type of filler is better for a patient wanting a more subtle, softer enhancement. Volbella is FDA-approved to last approximately 18 months.
  • Juvéderm and Voluma both add volume to the face. Voluma is specifically used for the cheeks, while Juvéderm can treat the tear troughs (the area under the eyes), the nasolabial folds, cheeks, temples, and the lips. Voluma is a softer viscosity, which can be better for those with thin skin or younger patients who don’t need as much protrusion. Voluma is FDA-approved for 20-24 months of lift. The more hydrating Juvéderm fillers, like Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Juvéderm Ultra, are FDA-approved for up to 12 months.

Botox vs. Xeomin

Botox and Xeomin are very similar products. They are both botulinum toxin injections that smooth frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. The difference is that Xeomin contains purely botulinum toxin, while Botox contains additional proteins. If you are developing resistance to Botox or having an allergic reaction, your provider may recommend switching to Xeomin.

Xeomin usually takes about 4 days to produce visible effects on the muscles, and lasts typically between 3-4 months. It is slightly less expensive than Botox per unit, with Xeomin at $10 retail price, and Botox at $13 per unit.

In addition, Botox needs to be refrigerated, while Xeomin often does not. Some patients prefer the “warm” injection of Xeomin to the “cold” injection of Botox. Overall, the results are very similar.

Botox vs. Dysport

Dysport is another product that’s similar to Botox, used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox uses botulinum type A, while Dysport uses type B. Dysport is a more diluted product than Botox, with only a third as much botulinum toxin in each dose. This means that more units are needed to achieve the same results as a Botox treatment. The price per unit is cheaper than Botox; Dysport is usually $5 per unit retail price.

Since Dysport is more diluted, it is formulated to spread faster over a wider surface area compared to Botox. This makes it ideal for treating large areas like forehead wrinkles and frown lines. Botox tends to remain more concentrated in smaller areas, which makes it ideal for smokers’ lines and crow’s feet. You can see how an expert provider could combine both Botox and Dysport, using the strengths of each treatment to smooth wrinkles in different areas of the face.

Botox vs. Jeuveau

Jeuveau, nicknamed #Newtox, came on the market in 2019 as a hot new competitor to Botox. Both use botulinum type A and have an identical injection procedure, requiring an equal number of units for treatment.

However, Jeuveau uses a slightly different chemical formula than Botox which acts faster, with results visible in two days instead of Botox’s 3-5 days. Botox has both cosmetic and medical uses, such as treating migraines or excessive sweating, while Jeuveau has been FDA-approved and marketed for cosmetic use only. It also lasts longer, typically 5-6 months instead of the usual 3-4 months with Botox. Their prices are about the same per unit.

One noticeable difference with Jeuveau is that when it is injected into the forehead area to smooth dynamic wrinkles, instead of creating a frozen, unmoving, somewhat unnatural result like some might experience with Botox, Jeuveau smoothes wrinkles and fine lines, but still gives your face some mobility, creating a more natural expression should you become surprised or upset.

When it comes to achieving smooth, flawless, younger looking skin, both Jeuveau and Botox will deliver effective, satisfactory results.
